How it started

The grants dried up, community jumped in.

When federal funding was in danger, members of the Marmot Research Project got creative. In July 2026, they set up OnlyMarms on OnlyFans to share the lives of their wild marmots to help fund a research program that has lasted more than six decades.

The story spread like wildfire, reaching audiences far outside the scientific community in a brief order. In response, members of the online community independently created a Solana token that pays creator royalties for the research – $ONLYMARMS.

Then Prof Julien Martin picked up the creator-fee wallet for the project, linking $ONLYMARMS directly to the research it was built to fund, adding another funding stream to the OnlyFans campaign – because every burrow needs more than one entrance.

Members of the online community created $ONLYMARMS independently after the OnlyMarms story went viral. The Marmot Research Project did not create or launch the token. Prof Julien Martin then took control of the creator-fee wallet for the project, which allows trading fees to directly fund the research.

Creator fees are generated by trading $ONLYMARMS. These fees go into a wallet controlled by the project to help defray the ongoing costs of the marmot research. This activity is independently verifiable on-chain.

The Marmot Research Project is one of the world's longest running studies of wild mammals. Since 1962, researchers have studied generations of yellow-bellied marmots in Colorado, creating a rare long-term dataset on behaviour, ecology, life history and responses to environmental change.
